ACW is co-sponsoring this event with the Elliott Bay Book Company

Lebanese author Rabih Alameddine will be reading from his new book

The Hakawati (The Storyteller)
from Alfred A Knopf Publisher

Where: Elliott Bay Book Company
101 South Main Street
Seattle, Washington 98104
206-624-6600

When:
Friday, May 16 at 7:30 pm

About the book: The Hakawati - the word means "story
teller" weaves together the story of a modern Lebanese family in
war-torn Beirut. The city is bombed out and bleak, not how he remembers
it. His father lies in a hospital bed while his entire al-Kharrat
family camps out in the waiting room. The al-Kharrats, a rowdy and wry
bunch, are both exasperated by and take solace in one another. And they
tell each other stories. We listen in on hilarious, fantastical stories
of Osama's childhood and that of his grandfather, who was a hakawati.

Who: Deborah Rohan Schlueter and Elliot Bay Book Company
Where: Montlake Branch, Seattle Public Library, 2401 24th Ave East
What: Reading from her book The Olive Grove: A Palestinian Story

Co-presented with the ARAB CENTER OF WASHINGTON and the WASHINGTON CENTER FOR THE BOOK AT THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY. Colorado writer Deborah Rohan Schlueter has drawn from the real-life story of Hamzi Moghrabi, his family and their Palestinian homeland in her debut novel, The Olive Grove: A Palestinian Story. Published by Saqi—based out of London, San Francisco, and Beirut—and generally considered the foremost English-language publisher by writers of Arab backgrounds or on Arab-related topics, this book carries empathy and questions, as it tells the story of a family's futile struggle to live and work an olive grove that has been in their family. "Beautifully written ... insights behind the Palestinian conflict are gained in reading this heart-wrenching yet endearing tale of one family's journey." – Polly Bacca.

The movies at the Crest do not look interesting and Trivia Night should be fun so let's do it.

November Transnational Trivia Challenge

Date: Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Time: 7:30 PM; Registration begins at 7:00 PM

Location: Spitfire (2219 Fourth Avenue, Seattle)

Cost: $5 members/students, $10 non-members

Registration: Please pre-register online or by calling the Council at (206) 441-5910.

Start: 10:00

What: Arabic Playgroup for Mamas and their Kiddos (0-5 years old)

When: Thursday, November 20th at 10:00 AM

Where: Tot Spot Cafe - 17802 134th Ave NE, Suite 6 Woodinville, WA 98072, (425) 488-2795

The TOT SPOT Cafe (http://www.totspotcafe.com/) is a great little cafe that caters to families and has ample space devoted to babies, crawlers, and toddlers and preschoolers. The one downside is that it costs $6 per hour/per kid and I would hate for cost to cause families to choose not to participate (especially with this bad economy)

I have a couple Arabic songs that I would love to share and sing with our kids. If you know some songs, please come ready to share too, and if you don't know any songs then come anyway so that you can learn some new songs to sing to your kids.
